Geneva Valkyrie
Our organization is community based, which means all of our players live in Geneva. We are unique within the world of travel softball. Our primary emphasis is to align our coaching and skill development with the needs of the Geneva High School softball program and prepare our young athletes for their journey as Geneva Vikings.
Geneva Softball serves elementary and middle school students. Beyond our practices and games as softball players, GSA engages the girls within our community. We place a priority on our players being available to play additional sports and participate in other extra-curricular activities. All members of our program are teammates on and off the field. Our expectations are high effort, focused practice time, personal growth, competitive spirit, and a joy for the game of softball.
We are here to raise the bar for softball in Geneva alongside our high school program. We believe that the shared experience and shared growth of these players operating together from a younger age will prepare them for a more advanced journey starting at the high school level.
Tryouts
Our tryouts are July 12 and 13. The timeslots are 9U/10U eligible players at 10AM on Sunday July 12 then 12U/13U eligible players at 1PM on Sunday July 12. The 11U timeslot will be Monday at 6PM. All tryouts will take place at Sunset Park Main Field. The number of teams depends on turnout at tryouts along with the skill level of the girls at the tryout. Our goal is to field as many teams as reasonably possible with consideration for necessary pitching/catching on each team and skill level.
Typical Season
Our teams traditionally practice twice per week in the Fall and play around 12-20 games. We are off November-December. Our winter program is January-March with two indoor practices per week (fielding and hitting/battery). After Spring Break, we head outside for two practices per week with weeknight games and weekend tournaments. Spring is roughly 30-45 games with appx. 2/3 of weekends from April through June being multiday tournaments. We like to wrap up the final weekend of June to give the girls time to enjoy summer.
Tryout Format
The tryout will allow players to showcase their skills across each position in the infield as well as work through key outfield principles. Each player will display baserunning ability in how they're able to get off the base for a steal then slide before also showing off their speed rounding third heading home. We will have some warmup stations to get the bats moving before the players see front toss and/or pitching machine balls.
The tryout process should last 90 to 120 minutes depending on player turnout. At that time, pitchers and catchers will stick around to show their skills in those areas. We will work on having pitchers hit first so they can warm up before the pitching/catching session.
Team Development
GSA is dedicated to helping the development of softball skills for our community. Every girl develops at a different pace. Our program has girls who started travel softball in 3rd grade and girls who started travel softball in 8th grade. Beyond analyzing player skill sets in tryouts and at their games, we pride ourselves on coachable players and positive teammates with positive families.
Our board will support the appropriate number of teams and age levels based on participation at tryouts. We have experience with what skills are necessary to compete in travel softball. We don't want girls to be discouraged from participating in softball. Numerous girls have not been ready for the leap at their first tryout but ultimately find their way to GSA when the timing is right for them.
Tryout Makeup Options
To help ensure a smooth evaluation process and provide a consistent experience for all athletes, we strongly encourage players to attend the primary tryout session based on their specific team selection. This allows our coaches to evaluate players fairly and efficiently while giving every athlete the same opportunity to showcase their skills.
However, we understand that the scheduled times may not work for every family. We will do our best to accommodate conflicts whenever possible and encourage you to reach out in advance if your athlete is unable to attend their designated session.
Please email genevailsoftball@gmail.com with all requests for a makeup tryout date. You must complete registration even if you need a makeup tryout. Our plan is to offer a date the week before tryouts and a date the week after tryouts. We will communicate those makeup dates to all families once established as that will impact the timing of offer letters and team formation.
